アゲハチョウは、鱗翅目アゲハチョウ科に分類されるチョウの仲間である。今回は、申請者が開発したアゲハの人工飼料(羽化率80%)を利用してアゲハチョウの教材を作成することにした。チョウの飼育教材は、全国の小学校(3年生の単元、チョウを育てよう)で使われており橿原市昆虫館で開発したモンシロチョウ教材(約300セット)、オオゴマダラ教材(約200セット)がすでに学校現場で使用されている。モンシロチョウ教材は市内をはじめ、大阪府、京都府や東日本大震災で被災した岩手県山田町と宮古市に提供している。オオゴマダラ教材も沖縄県石垣市の全小学校で活用されている。そこで、今回開発したアゲハ教材を小学校の教員30名に対して平成27年から平成28年にかけて実験的に使用してもらいアンケート調査を行った。その結果、4名の教員しか成虫にできなかった。その主な原因は、人工飼料の制作とその飼育方法の不慣れからくるものであった。また、アンケートの中では、モンシロチョウの発生の単元の時間数(10時間前後)に合致しており、アゲハチョウの発生は約20日～25日が必要であり教育計画がたてにくい。設計した飼育ケースが紙ベースであるので耐水性に課題がある等の意見を頂いた。アゲハチョウとモンシロチョウを教材として使用した時の指導内容の教育効果は、アゲハチョウのほうが高いことが示されている(授業「アゲハチョウの不思議を探る」をめぐって、村上忠幸、京都教育大学教育実践研究紀要2011, (11)49-58)。教育効果が高くても教育現場へ導入するには今回の教材は、改良が必要である。特に、人工飼料の作り方をさらに簡素化する必要がある(一個体の幼虫を成虫にまで育てるのにミカンの葉であれば30～40枚(葉身5cm程度)必要である。)。発生についての期間が指導単元の時間数と異なるのは、現場の教員がアゲハチョウを教材として使用しない要因でもある。比較研究として、外来種であるミカン科植物のヘンルーダ(Ruta graveolens)(別名 : アゲハ草)1本(50cm)を食草としてナミアゲハ4個体を飼育したが成虫にすることができなかった。原因は、アリやハチによって狩られてしまった。外来種であるヘンルーダを使用するのも、管理が必要である。学校現場で教材として使用するには、指導者の負担をできるだけ少なくし、子どもたちにより分かりやすい教材が必要である。今後、更に改良を進め、総合的な学習の時間や社会教育での活用を視野に入れた教材として活用できるように取り組んでいく。
