本研究の目的は,書くことによる中学生の自己認識力の発達について,文種の違いと自己認識の関係を明らかにすることにある。特に,中学生が「私」という主語で再現的に記述する文章(生活文)と「私」を直接的には用いずに論理や虚構に重点を置いて記述する文章(意見文・創作文)の違いをどのように認識しているかを明らかにすることである。研究の方法として,中学1年生を対象に共通の例文(生活文)を提示し,次の条件で2種類の文種に書き分けさせた。意見文の場合は,「もとの文章の『わたし』という言葉を使用しない」「もとの文章の中の出来事の一部を材料として用いる」「結論としての意見は指定した共通のものにする」等という条件である。創作文の場合の条件は,「もとの文章の中の『わたし』を登場させない」「話の内容は,出来事の部分的な追加や削除は認めるが大きな変更は行わない」「登場人物については事件の当事者の一方のみ指定した共通の名前にする」等である。この調査の結果,次のようなことが明らかになってきた。「文章表現」や「構成」などの書き方については,基礎的な知識や技能が認められた。たとえば,「論理による展開」と「時間による展開」という順序の違いや,「根拠を述べる」と「描写する」という表現方法の違いについての理解は優れていた。これに対して,表現者としての「私」と文章中の「私」の区別については,分化できていない者が多かった。たとえば,相手(読者)を意識して自己の論理を対象化すること,主人公の背後に自分の視点を固定し出来事を物語ることが,ほとんどできていない。ただし,生活文のような自己の直接的な表出は抑制される傾向にある。事前に文種の特徴を理解させたうえで記述させれば,目標とする文種を意識した書き分けと自己認識の向上は十分に可能であると思われる。
