仏国では、更新世人類の活動を、実に克明に再現する研究が知られる。その糸口は、先史時代において道具の材料として所謂フリント岩が一貫して使われ、時代とそれぞれの技術の変遷が同一の物質上に観察できるのである。これらは石英の一種で玉髄等を指し、混合物の相違で産出地固有の色調を帯びる。本計画は、アキテーヌ地方で、これらの獲得流通に関する先端的諸研究を詳しく理解し、我が国に応用する可能性を探る目的である。本研究は、1980年代に至るP.-Y.ドゥマール.やJ.-M.ジュネスト等の考古記載岩石学上の成果を、基礎文献とし出発する。如上は、所謂「ボルドー学派」に属し、70年代まで「ボルドゥ分析法」と呼ばれる先端的な石器形態学を展開する。80年代に、学際的な新機軸として「石材の獲得」「製作技術」等の主題を展開する。本計画には、90年代以降も研究を継続する者との交流を、更に2007年の仏国立先史学博物館主催「特別展」の参観も含まれる。本計画を実施した結果、この地の旧石器時代人類の活動領域は、河川流域で、その源流〜河口まで、文献紹介された大別14類型のフリント露頭を踏査し、ここで多様な自然環境の岩石が人為的に移動していることを再確認する。例えば旧人の遺跡では、既に多様なフリント類型が搬入され、アミダ状に形成された大河川と各支の往来網が、東西120km、南北80kmの範囲に存在した。一方、新人よる後期旧石器時代には、より多様な類型が加わり、特定の石器製作を目的に複雑な変異関係が観察されるのである。後者では、前段の中期旧石器文化と同じ領域から獲得されたが、より優れた質を追求し、稀な類型や遠隔地産のものが重要な役割を果たすのである。結果、旧人と新人では、活動の様態が根本的に相違し、前者には現生人類の民族誌的事例が殆ど適合しないのである。結語として、本計画で得られた知見は、我が国の旧石器文化の研究に、大いに役立つものと確信するに至る。
