本研究の目的は,幕末維新期にベルギー商社設立やパリ万博出展の斡旋など薩摩藩と極めて深い関わりを持ったフランス貴族モンブラン伯爵に関する史料の調査である。従来,幕末薩摩藩の外交史の研究は,薩英戦争,留学生派遣,グラバーからの武器調達など,対イギリスとの関係を中心に進められてきた。モンブラン伯爵との関係については,日本側の史料がほとんど残されていないという状況から本格的な研究は行われてこなかった。モンブラン伯爵のご子孫が史料を所蔵していることは一部では知られていたが,研究者が同史料を活用することは不可能であった。そうした中,このたびモンブラン伯爵のご子孫で史料所蔵者のボードワン・モンブラン氏から史料調査の許可が下り,今回の調査が実現した。史料は数点ずつ封筒に入れられ,3箱の段ボールに入れられていたが,目録なども存在せずほとんど未整理の状態であった。合計数百点に上る史料のうち,幕末薩摩藩に関するものを選び出しデジカメで撮影した。さらに,ボードワン・モンブラン氏に聞き取りを行い,史料伝存の経緯などについて調査した。モンブラン家の旧居城であるインゲルムンステル城の調査についても,現在の城館の所蔵者である地元のビール会社の協力を得て行った。当日は,地元の郷土史家のアルバート氏も調査に立ち会ってくださり,これまで調べたモンブラン家の歴史についてもご教授いただいた。帰国後,鹿児島県歴史資料センター黎明館所蔵(寄託)の玉里島津家資料や大阪商工会議所所蔵の五代友厚関係史料などと照らし合わせる作業を続けているが,両史料群には含まれない史料が数点モンブラン家史料に含まれることが判明した。今後,さらに詳細に比較・分析を続けたい。
