研究目的 ヤギは上顎歯床板と下顎切歯で草をはさみ、噛みちぎるという採食様式を示し、過密下では草を根まで食べつくすことから、世界で砂漠化や植生破壊などの食害を起こしている。シバヤギでは下顎が短縮した短顎変異が発現する。変異形質における採食行動の分析は、ヤギの食害抑制を図るうえで有用なデータとなり得る。本研究では、短顎形質が採食行動に与える影響を検討した。研究方法実験I 異なる長さの草(0.5、1.0、1.5.2.0cm)での噛みちぎり成功率の比較。実験II 噛みちぎりが必要ない条件(細断された乾草)での1分間採食量の比較。実験III 草地における採食行動の撮影映像から(1)地面に対する下顎の角度、(2)1分間の噛みちぎり回数、(3)採食中の移動歩数の比較。結果と考察実験I 草長1.0cmと1.5cmで、短顎個体の採食成功率が有意に低く、短顎は低い草の噛みちぎりに不適であることが明らかとなった。実験II 噛みちぎりなしでの採食量は、短顎個体が有意に少なかった。実験III 短顎個体は(1)顎をより水平に倒して採食しており、(2)噛みちぎり回数は有意に少なかった。一方で、(3)採食中の移動歩数に有意差はなかった。また行動観察から(4)短顎個体は高めの草を好み、口腔の奥まで草を入れて噛みちぎることがある、(5)短顎個体は噛みちぎりの音が弱い、という所見も得られた。総合考察 短顎個体では、上顎が地表面にあたって下顎切歯が草に届かず、短い草の採食が困難であることが確認された。さらに噛みちぎり以外の採食行動にも影響が及んでおり、短顎個体は総合的に採食能力が劣ることが示唆された。一方で顎を倒すことで下顎を地表面に近づける、臼歯を使って噛みちぎるなど、短顎形質に適応した行動様式をとっていることも明らかとなった。本研究により、短顎はヤギの食べつくしを妨げ、放牧における食害抑制につながる可能性を持つ形質であることが示唆された。
