(目的)知的障害のある生徒、特にダウン症の平衡性のトレーニングとしての空手の効果について調べた。空手は平衡性に大きな付加がかかる運動であるうえに、沖縄県においては広く普及し、知的障害のある生徒にとって空手衣を着て演武をすることは極めてかっこよいことであり、高い動機づけが期待できる。(方法)特別支援学校寄宿舎の中学部及び高等部生徒22名(ダウン症10名)に、サークル活動として空手の練習を行った。指導は大学の空手部2～3名が行い、補助員として寄宿舎指導員2名程度が担当した。練習は週1回1時間程度とした。練習は23回実施したが、実習等で欠席することもあり平均練習回数は18.3回であった練習メニューは突き、蹴り、型練習が主であり、普及型の習得を目標にした。なお、練習の動機づけを高めるため、学園祭と学習発表会で演武を披露することにした練習効果は起立時の重心動揺の振幅と平均台歩きにより確認した。重心動揺は任天堂製ゲーム機wiiスポーツを使用し、平均台は長さ300cm高さ4cm幅2.5cmから12.5cmの5台の平均台歩きを行った。(結果)空手の練習は重度の知的障害のある生徒においても1時間集中して取り組め、予想を上回る動機づけの高い課題であった。練習前後の平衡性検査を比較すると、重心動揺の振幅は減少する傾向が示されたが、平均台歩きについて変化の傾向は示されなかった。平衡性維持における集中力等の精神的な部分への効果が推測される。今後、演武中及び平均台歩きのフォーム分析を行うとともに、障害特性について継続して検討したい。
