消費者が安全・安心な農産物を求める機運は益々増大する一方である。このような購買者の消費動向に対し生産者としてどのような情報をどのような形態で提供すれば消費者ニーズに対応できるかを明らかにしようとした。筑波大学農林技術センターで生産した農産物を同販売所で販売し、その際、SEICA(青果ネットカタログ)や掲示などで生産履歴を公表した。購入者を対象としたアンケート調査を実施して、生産履歴情報の公開手法の違いによる消費動向の差を特別栽培農産物の認証付与の有無で比較検討した。さらに、タイ王国・バンコク市にある食品市場内で、消費者を対象にアンケート調査を実施して生産履歴情報の公開が購入動向に及ぼす影響を調査した。日本では、61%が農産物生産履歴情報を要求し、その情報入手手段は(1)販売員23%(2)掲示21%(3)インターネット11%(4)広告8%の順となった。特に必要とする項目は、農薬や肥料の使用状況、鮮度保存および安全衛生対策で、農産物認証を取得している農産物より認証を取得していない農産物で情報を求める回答が多かった。一方、タイ王国では82%が農産物生産履歴情報を要求し、情報の入手手段は(1)生産者30%(2)販売員27%(3)掲示16%(4)広告14%(5)インターネット11%であった。以上、二ヶ国の調査結果から、農産物生産履歴はインターネットより、店内での対面説明を消費者が求めていることが明らかとなった。しかし、対面説明では情報提供の機会、量が限られてしまうため、掲示を併用した提供方法や、購入後も情報入手が可能でより詳細な情報を提供できるインテーネットを用いた情報提供の促進が必要と考えられた。タイ王国では、食品の品質と安全性を保証する国家認証のQマークが知られているが、生産者からの生産履歴の公表を求める消費者が多いことから、農産物の生産履歴を開示して販売することで、さらに消費者の安心が高まり、適正に生産された農産物の販売が促進される可能性があると考えられた。
