《研究目的》児童期の中で、中学年は日常的な生活語彙から抽象的な語彙に移行する時期である。この時期に豊富な語彙を身につけることが、その後の読解力にどのような影響を与えるのかを明らかにすることが本研究の目的である。それと並行して、語彙力を高めるために必要な指導の体系化を試み、年間を通じた指導を行って、その効果について検証を行った。《研究内容》研究対象は4年生児童とした。教科書の言語単元と開発した単元を組み合わせたカリキュラムを構成し、「言葉の達人をめざそう」とテーマを掲げ、一年間継続的な指導を続けた。また国語の授業の冒頭5分間を「ことばトレーニングの時間」とし、言葉集めなどゲーム感覚で学べる活動を継続的に実施した。家庭学習でも熟語・短文作りを日常的に行うよう指導した。更にことわざ・慣用句・四字熟語などについての児童用図書を約30冊教室に置くなど、言語環境の整備にも気を配った。そして、言葉に興味を持ち始めた児童が達成感をもてるよう自分が見つけた新しい言葉や身につけた言い回しを書き込んでいくオリジナルの言葉辞典を作成させた。このような指導を行った児童に対し、指導前と後に「教研式読書力診断検査」を行って、指導を行っていない児童群との比較分析を行った。《研究結果》分析の結果、読字力・語彙力・文法力・読解力の総合である読書力において、特別に語彙指導を施した学級は、そうでない学級と比較して統計的に有意な伸びを記録した。また、語彙力のみの結果においても、有意傾向にある仲び率の差が見られた。一方、読解力に関しては、有意な伸びは見られなかった。しかし、この1年間に児童が文学的教材を学習した際、学習前と後に書いた感想文を比較すると、学習前に一読した後の感想文で既に文章中の言葉に着目した文章を長く書けるようになったという傾向が見られ、語彙指導が語彙力だけでなく文章を注意して読む力につながった可能性が伺える。
