昭和22年4月から小学校で使用された小学校国語科教科書を中心として、戦後「新教育」期における国語科の活動主義的な学習形態が教材の面でどのように保障されていたかを考察する目的で研究を行った。「なすことによって学ぶ」を標榜して展開された戦後「新教育」の中で、国語科教科書が「教科書を学ぶ」=教科書に書かれてある知識・内容・価値観を身に付ける、といった戦前期の注入主義的な教材集から、児童の自発的な学習体験を実施するための教材集へといかに変化したかを探ることに研究の焦点を当てた。他方、戦前期の潮流を継承し、「教科書を学ぶ」式の指導法で扱うしかなかったと思われる教材がどの程度存在したかについての調査も視野に入れ、分析と考察を行った。研究対象とする教科書については購入、研究者からの借用、補助教材調査(釧路)で入手し、複写保存を行った(東日本大震災の影響で今回入手を断念した資料もあった。小学校低学年用の教科書において顕著だったのは、児童に発声と遊戯を通した交流を促す教材が多数採録されていたことである。発声という点で共通する教材はかつての第四期・第五期国定読本にも存在したが、それらが国家への所属意識を持たせることを目的としていたのに対し、第六期国定国語教科書以降、昭和20年代の国語科教科書では身近な存在に目を向けさせ、児童の交流の出発点を形成するものとなっている。同様の傾向は中・高学年の物語、詩、戯曲等、主として文学的教材においてもみられた。場面として家庭生活、学校生活を設定している教材が多く、道徳的な教訓を読み取るよりも、児童の視点から疑問を発して話し合い等へと移行できるよう工夫を試みたことが推察される。一方で説明文や随想等は、内容の理解と価値観の習得に留まらざるを得なかったと思われる教材が高学年を中心にみられた。今回の成果は24年6月の早稲田大学国語教育学会等において報告・公表する。
