项目摘要

東亜同文書院の中国語教育の実態や内容の変化を明らかにすることを目的として、国立国会図書館、東京大学明治新聞雑誌文庫、長崎大学、長崎県立図書館、北九州中央図書館、福岡市博物館などで、『華語葦編』初集、『華語蹉歩』の各版や関連資料の調査を行い、次ぎのような成果をえた。(1)『華語〓歩』についてa.最古の版を確認した。中国語音をカナ表記する附属教材『華語〓歩音集』があることから該書は元々独習での使用を想定して執筆されたと考えられる。b.日清貿易研究所使用の上下2編の内の下編を確認した。この分析から東亜同文書院使用本は日清貿易研究所の入門レベルで使用された上編と内容が同じであったと推定する。c.荒尾精の私塾でも使用されたことを確認した。日清貿易研究所出身白岩龍平は該書を用いて井上雅二などに中国語を教えた。d.1917年までの刊行は知られてきたが、新に1920年まで刊行されていたことを確認した。(2)『華語萃編』初集についてa.東亜同文書院は『華語〓歩』に次いで該書を作成し使用したとされてきたが、新資料『同窓』の記述と同校図書館蔵書目録から『華語萃編』以前に『北京官話教科書』が作られていたことを確認した。b.6種の版をデジタル化したものを計量分析した結果、5回の改訂の内、大幅なものは2回であった。特に大学昇格時の改訂では、以前の会話例文のみの内容から魯迅や梁啓超の白話作品を収録したものへと変化していた。以上の新しい知見から、東亜同文書院はまず教育実績のあった『華語〓歩』の入門レベル部分を使用し、次ぎに独自に『北京官話教科書』を作成、それらの経験の上に会話例文集的な『華語葦編』初集を作り、これに中国語の変化を反映させ、大学昇格時には読本的な性格をもったものに変化しつつあったことを確認した。これらから東亜同文書院の中国語教育は、実用重視だけから大学の教養科目としての語学教育という性格も帯びるものへと変化しつつあったことが明らかとなった。
