バンドデシネというフランス語圏のマンガは、1990年代以降その存在感を増し、各方面の注目を浴びるようになり、日本でも積極的に翻訳されるようになってきた。バンドデシネはフランス文化を映す鏡であると同時に、マンガというメディアが時代の変化にうまく対応する形で誕生し、変遷をとげてきたことを示す歴史的資料としても重要である。このような問題設定においては、多様なアプローチがありえるわけだが、今回はブノワ・ペータースとフランソワ・スクイテンの『闇の国々』の第二巻と第三巻の翻訳作業から多くのことを学ぶことができた。著者の来目に合わせてインタビューをする機会にも恵まれ、彼らの創作の秘密についてだけでなく、BDと視覚文化の変容について研究するうえでも貴重な体験となった。その成果の一部は、大学でBDや文学について講じる経験に基づく論考として雑誌『ユリイカ』の「世界マンガ体系」に発表することができた。日本のマンガとBDが大学教育に少しずつではあるが文学のような他の科目にも影響を与え始めていることをブルデュー社会学の知見を生かしながら論じており、今回の研究テーマであるバンドデシネと視覚文化の変容という主題においては、文化資本という観点からも考察できることを示唆することができた。またマンガの発明者と称せられるロドルフ・テプフェールについての研究書の共訳の作業も進めており、テクノロジーの進化と都市化に伴うマンガというナラティヴ・メディアの誕生と変容についてというジョナサン・クレーリーやササキバラ・ゴウらが興味深い研究を実践している分野についても、同書の翻訳出版をきっかけにさらに掘り下げていくことが可能になると確信している。
