小学校英語については各学校の活動のばらつきにより、円滑な接続の観点から中学校との緊密な連携が重要である。また、小中の接続時期における生徒の情意面は不安定であり、入学前の不安を中学校時期に楽しさへ変えるものは、「わかる/できる」という安心感であることが分かっている。本研究ではこれらの課題を解決する手段として、小中学生の交流学習を含む新たな英語学習モデルを作成し、その効果を検証した。新たな英語学習モデルでは今回開発したWEBサイトにアクセスして交流学習を行う。事前に交流する小中学生のペアを登録しておき、まず小学生が英語にしたい文章を日本語で入力する。次に中学生がその文章を英語に翻訳し、発音する。その際に英語の堪能な協力者がその内容に対して指導を行う。完成したら文章や音声を小学生がアクセスできる形で登録する。そして小学生はその内容を確認して自分の話したかった文章を実際英語で話す。この一連の流れにおいてデータはサーバ上に登録される為、交流は非同期的に行うことができる。本研究では上記の英語学習モデルを小学六年生とその小学生が翌年通う中学校の三年生の間で検証した。中学生の英語の内容に関しては中学校の英語教師が確認した。交流学習実施後に小中学生双方にアンケートをとり、授業を担当した教師にも聞き取り調査を行い、その効果を測定した。その結果、中学校で学ぶ英語に対する不安が少なくなったと感じた小学生は55%であった。また、中学生には教えるという意識が働き、伝わりやすい発音などを心掛けている様子が確認でき、自身の英語学習にも有効だと感じた生徒が97%いた。本研究成果から、新しい英語学習モデルにより小中学生双方にとって効果の高い英語学習が行えることが明らかになった。実施に当たっても同期的な交流と異なり学校間で実施日を一致させる必要がなく負担の少ない形で行えるため、今後広く利用されることが期待できる。
