大学図書館が提供する情報には図書・雑誌といった従来からの冊子体資料に加え、オンラインコンテンツやデータベースなどWebでの学術情報の提供も大きな役割を担うようになってきている。一方、学生はレポート作成などの学習に際して、これら図書館が提供する情報を十分活用しきれていない実態がある。これは、図書館が提供するコンテンツが学生にとってわかりやすく構築されておらず、学術情報にアクセスする手段が理解されていないことに原因があると考えられる。これらの問題について、コンテンツの提供手段として新たなWeb上のサービスを先駆的に取り入れている大学図書館等の調査を行った。また図書館のみならず、学務情報や研究者情報など、学習者にとって重要な情報がどのように扱われているのかも調査し、構築しようとする電子図書館サービスの課題点を整理した。さらに大学生からモニターを募り、国内外の大学図書館等のWebサイトや検索サービスを評価することで、学生が学習する上での問題点を探り、より使いやすい機能やインターフェイスについて検討を行った。以上の研究をもとに、学生が学習で求めている情報と図書館が提供するコンテンツを結びつけて示すことができるように、図書館の情報に加え、大学の授業情報や教員情報を関連づける方策を検討した。統合したシステムでそれぞれ異なる形式の情報を扱えるために、統一したメタデータフォーマットへの変換規則を作成し、これらの情報を検索できる新たなサービスをオープンソフトウェアを用いて構築した。
