本研究の目的は、松前藩の祖武田信広が築城した勝山館跡(室町期)の墓域である夷王山墳墓群の磁気探査及び地中レーダー探査を行った墳墓を対象に発掘調査を実施し、和人墓(土葬・火葬)やアイヌ墓といった葬送を確認するものである。これらの調査成果によって磁気及び地中レーダー探査の精度が確認されれば、発掘調査で遺構を掘削しないで葬送を特定することができ、遺跡の保護はもとより夷王山墳墓群における様相の把握が期待される。平成26年度は、夷王山墳墓群の第Ⅰ・Ⅲ・V地区で墓と思われる合計60箇所(各地区20箇所)を対象に地中レーダー及び磁気探査を実施して、強い反応を示した9基で発掘調査を行っている。磁気探査で強い反応がみられた2基では、副葬品である大型の鉄製品の検出が期待されたが、数多くの礫が検出されるのみであった。その結果、当墳墓群の礫が磁気を帯びており磁気探査に反応していることが判明し、磁気探査における確認が困難であることが判明した。一方、レーダー探査で反応がみられた箇所は、いずれも和人墓(土葬)を確認することができた。そのため、レーダー探査が墓を確認する上で有効な手段であることが判明したため、次年度では地中レーダー探査による調査を実施した。平成27年度は、13基の墓と思われる箇所を対象に地中レーダー探査実施し、3箇所で強い反応を得た。その3箇所を発掘調査した結果、2箇所で和人墓(土葬)を検出した。残り1箇所については、駒ヶ岳d火山灰層が検出されたため、テフラに反応したものと思われる。平成26・27年度の調査の結果では、地中レーダー探査が高い確率で墳墓を捉えることができるため、有効な手段であることが確認された。さらに、地中レーダー探査の測定方法や周波数の精度を高めることによって、墓壙形態の把握も可能と思われるため、遺構を破壊することなく遺跡の活用に寄与できるものと考えられる。
