麻酔下の雑種成犬で、貧血モデル、脱血モデル、PEEPモデル、および低酸素血症モデルにおいて、O2 deliveryを段階的に下げていき、低酸素状態を作製した。これまでの、VO2を基準とした“critical O2 delivery"は、成犬でおよそ12ml/min/kgであった。だが、ラクテート、胃pHi、動静脈pH較差、動靜脈PCO2較差はいずれもDO2が15〜20ml/kg/minの範囲で上昇または低下し始めた。また、DYE-TRACK^Rシステムのダイマイクロソフェアを用いて血流のre-distributionを調査した結果、胃ではDO2が約20ml/kg/minで、腎臓ではDO2が約12ml/kg/minで、血流が急激に低下したが、心筋の血流はDO2が5ml/kg/min以下まで保たれた。ショックの最も初期の段階では、全身の酸素消費では診断できない時点で、すでに消化管などの虚血が起きているが、これらの虚血による僅かなVO2の低下は、DO2-VO2のブロットでは見逃されてしまう。しかし、胃の血流はDO2が約20ml/kg/minですでに急激に低下し始め、胃pHiは、これを知る極めて鋭敏な指標となっている。また、これまでの、VO2を基準とした“critical O2 delivery"は、酸素消費量の多い腎臓の血流が急激に低下するあたり(DO2約12ml/kg/min)に相当すると考えられる。ショックにおける真の“critical O2 delivery"が、VO2の低下し始める時点よりもかなり高いDO2であることが、ダイマイクロソフェアを用いた血流のre-distributionの見地からも裏付けられた。
