明治初期の翻訳家政書のなかで特に著名なハスケル原著、永峯秀樹抄訳『経済小学 家政要旨』(明治9年刊)に関する研究の一環として、その原典ハスケル夫人著『主婦百科』のアメリカ家政学教育史上における特質の解明を目的として研究を行った。その研究方法として、19世紀アメリカ家政学成立史において著名なビ-チャーの著作との比較を試みた。ビ-チャーには数多くの著作があるが、今回比較に用いた資料は、ビ-チャーの最も代表的な家政書である“A Treatise on Domestic Economy"(1841)、“Miss Beecher's Domestic Receipt Book"(1850年版)、“The Principles of Domestic Science"(1870)の3冊である。その結果、『主婦百科』は、大半を占める料理に関する内容においては“Miss Beecher's Domestic Receipt Book"と近似している。しかし『家政要旨』に訳出された箇所は、ビ-チャーの他の2冊と共通する部分が多かった。ハスケルとビ-チャーの共通点は、若い家政担当者が直面する家政遂行上の困難性や健康上の問題が執筆動機となっている点であり、ともにこうした課題解決のために、科学的知識を積極的に導入しようと試みている。一方、課題解決の方法として、ビ-チャーは、家政は女性の天職であり、女子高等教育に家政教育を取り入れることで、若い主婦が抱える問題の解決を図ろうと試みたのに対し、ハスケルは、女性の家政遂行上不可欠な夫(男性)の役割にも着目し、その協力を呼びかけるなどの違いがみられた。このことから、両者の対象とする読者層や執筆目的が異なり、執筆者の立脚する宗教的基盤や依拠する科学的知識の相異と相俟って、ハスケルとビ-チャーの家政書の内容構成、特に科学的記述の採用量における質的な違いが生じたものと考える。なお、今回の研究成果の一部は、平成9年6月の日本家政学会において発表し、同学会誌に投稿予定である。
