わが国の家政学成立史上重要な転換期と考えられる明治初期の翻訳家政書が、わが国の家政教育・家政学に対して与えた影響に関する研究の一環として、今回の研究は、当時最も普及したとみられるハスケル原著、永峯秀樹抄訳『経済小学 家政要旨』(明治9年刊)の原典解明と、同書と原典との比較を中心に研究を勧めた結果、次のことが明らかになった。これまで『経済小学 家政要旨』の原典に関しては全く不明とされてきたが、初版の刊行以来約120年ぶりに、原典がE.F.Haskell:Tha Housekeeper′s Encyclopedia,D.Appleton & co.,(1860)であることを解明し、アメリカイリノイ州立大学から原書の複写を取り寄せることができた。また、この原書をもとに、新たな翻訳書を作成し、原書と訳書との比較、分析、訳出過程について、研究を進めた。すなわち、『主婦百科』とでも訳される原書は、当時のアメリカ人主婦に必要とされた家庭生活全般に関する知識について執筆されたもので、総ページ数445ページに及ぶ。原書の内容を領域別にみると、領域は多方面にわたっているが、食生活(調理法)に関する内容が6割以上を占めている。しかし、全体の訳出率は1割程度の約40ページであり、領域による訳出率の差が見られた。こうした訳出率の違いは、翻訳者永峯秀樹の翻訳の意図とあわせて、当時の日本における家庭生活文化の違いが反映されているものと思われる。なお、この原典のアメリカ家政学史上における位置の解明については、この領域に関する先行研究や資料が現段階では少ないため、今後さらに検討を要する。最後に、今回の研究成果の一部は、平成7年5月の日本家政学会において発表し、同学会誌に投稿予定である。
