本研究は,l.視覚共鳴反応説による現象の説明,2.視覚共鳴反応と模倣との発達的な関連性,3.一致反応が成立する際のメカニズムの解明の3つの目的を検討すべく計画された。まず,喜び,悲しみ,怒り,驚きの4種類の感情を交えた顔の表情についてのビデオ映像刺激を撮影した。4名の女性による顔の表情のジェスチャーの中から最も標準的であると判断されるものをブラインドテストによって選択し,最も肯定的な判断が多かったものを選択した。これらの表情の中から,モデルの左右の目,左右の口角,口唇の上下につけたマーカーの運動量を測定し,目と口唇の動きの典型的な動きの定量的測定を行った。健康な乳児に対して上記で作成した視覚刺激を,4名(刺激のモデル)×4種類(喜び,悲しみ,怒り,驚き)×2試行の計32試行提示した。2-3ヵ月児4例,5〜6力月児3例,8〜9ヵ月児3例のデータを得た。被験児の顔のブラインドテストによる評定結果と提示したモデルの感情を交えた表情との間の一致性を検討したところ,2〜3ヶ月児は,モデルの感情に交えた表情に高い確率で出現した。他方,5〜6ヵ月児,8〜9ヵ月児においては,一致反応の出現は有意に高くはなかった。そこで,生後2〜3ヶ月の被験児の顔の表情のビデオテープから,左右の目,左右の口角,口唇の上下につけたマーカーの運動量を測定し,l00msレベルの時系列分析を行ったところ,4名の被験児全体では特定の反応周期はあきらかでなかった。上述の3つの目的のうち,1については2〜3ヶ月の反応の一致と5〜6ヶ月以降の一致反応の減少ということに関しては視覚共鳴反応説による説明が可能である。また,5〜6ヶ月以降で一致反応が極端に減少したことは,この時期から乳児の能動的な表出系の働きがとくに強まったことによるものであると考えられ,反応への動機付けをいかにコントロールするかが課題とされた。
