他者への積極的働きかけである自己呈示が,呈示者自身にどのような影響を与えるかを検討するために実験を行った.独立変数として面接状況での自己呈示(内向的vs外向的)と想定させる呈示の観察者(他者vs親友)を,従属変数として外向性-向向性の自己評価尺度と行動尺度を取り検討した.対人認知の実験に使う材料を集めるための研究である告げ,半数の被験者には内向的に,残りの半数の被験者には外向的に見えるように自己呈示をするように教示した.別室で10分程度の面接を行いビデオでその様子を撮影した.次に呈示観察者の操作として,他者群では心理学科の4年生に見せたら,親友群ではあなたの親友に見せたら,どのような印象を持たれるかを想定させ評定させた.もう一つの実験に参加するように依頼をして従属変数を測定した.別室の待合室に誘導し,次の実験の協同参加者と紹介された実験協力者とどのような相互作用を取るかを行動尺度として測定した.さらに,外向性と内向性に関わる自己評定尺度を測定した.結果として,行動尺度に関して,実験協力者との椅子の距離では,外向群は内向群に比べ,近くに座るという効果が見られ,その傾向は他者群において顕著であるという有意に近い傾向が見られた.さらに,話しかけるまでの時間においても,交互作用効果が見られ,他者群においてのみ外向群が内向群に比べ,話しかける時間が長くなるという結果が得られた.自己評定尺度全体では,有意な効果が見られなかったが,「社交的ー非社交的」の評定では,行動尺度と同様の結果が見られた.本研究の結果は,同様の自己呈示をした場合でも,受け手として想定させる人物が異なれば,その後の行動も変化するという現象が得られ,自己呈示の内在化が行動尺度においても見られることと,誰を想定するかというメンタル・シュミレーションによって異なった効果を持ちうることを示すものと言えよう.
