京都を代表する伝統産業の一つである西陣機業においては、高度の熟練技術を駆使する少量生産の高級品など一部の部門を除いては、実機業従事者に占める女性の割合は低くない。とくに大正時代に始まった力織機の普及の過程で、女性の織り手が増加した。それまでの西陣織生産の主力であった手機に比べ、操作技術の習得に必要な時間や製織そのものに要する時間が短いこと、使う体力も相対的に少ないこと、などの理由から、女性により適しているとみなされたためである。賃機として機業に従事する世帯は、従来製織過程よりもその周辺作業を担っていた女性成員を織り手として生産者に組み入れた。第二次世界大戦後、とりわけ高度経済成長期の若年労働力不足と技術的改良を背景として、力織機化が急速に進行する中、製織従事者に占める女性の割合はさらに増加した。同時に、丹後地区を中心とする出機進出が進み、そこでも縮緬機業の職工経験者を中心とする女性労働力が雇用の中心となった。夫とともに自宅で機業に従事する既婚女性の働き方に注目すると、「ながら労働」といわれるように、家事・育児との両立を前提とした細切れの時間配分をせざるを得ず、機業に割く労働時間は男性よりも短くなるという特徴がある。また60歳以上の老年については、男性が長年の経験を背景に現役の織り手として働いているのに対し、女性は孫の世話、家事の補助などの役を引き受け、機業に関しては糸繰り・管巻などの補助的作業を担っている場合が多い。しかし、経験年数や技能の点で、有意な男女差はみられない。賃金形態は出来高払いであるため、男女の平均所得の差も、労働時間の差によって生ずるものである。機織りが女性の領域とされているバリ農村では、織布業に従事する女性が家事・育児と仕事を平行させながらも一人前の織り手として認められ、家計への貢献も高く評価されているのに比べ、西陣機業の女性労働者の場合は、夫もまず織り手であることが多く、したがって女性は世帯内で補助労働力的な位置づけに甘んじている。このことが女性自身の労働意識にも影響を与え、実際には長年の経験と高い技能を保持しているにもかかわらず、自らの仕事を「内職」と認識するにとどまっていると考えられる。
