本研究では、日本語の品詞体系を語彙の機能の観点から再検討を加える作業を行った。特に,従来「形容動詞」と分類されてきたものについては,その語幹と名詞との連続性があり,副詞との連続性も検討しなければならない。そこで,本研究では,これらの語が次の二点で共通性を有することを指摘し,これを一括して扱うことを検討した。共通点とは,いずれも単独で,あるいは,助詞を伴って,連用修飾成分になるという点と,一定の形式を伴って連体修飾成分や述部を形成するという点の二点である。これらを一括して扱うということは,その下位分類が必要になるということである。そこで,精密に記述する手段として,接続の形式別に記号化して表示する方法を案出した.具体的には,連体修飾の形式を「xな」「xの」「xした」「xしている」「xする」「xたる」「xなる」などに分け,「xの」の「の」は叙述的な用法と限定的な用法に区分し, 「する」の活用形の3つについても「と」「に」などの助詞の出現の義務性と時制解釈の有無で区分するなど,詳細に下位区分を設定した.連用修飾の区分については,「xに」「xと」「Xで」のほかに「x」単独の形式の4つのほか「xとして」などを加えた.述語の形式については,「xだ」「xする」「Xしている」「Xした」などにわけ,「する」の活用形を用いるものについては「と」や「に」の出現の義務性と時制解釈で更に区分した。また,あわせてこのような形式に中では,「する」が虚辞的な要素として用いられることがあるという点についても指摘した。これに従って,実際に分類を行い,従来の品詞区分では記述できない統語特性も表示できるなど,より精密な記述が可能であることを確認した。
