本研究は日本語の行為要求表現について、小説などの書記資料だけでなく、録画資料を活用することによって終助詞の有無や音声にまで注意を向けた詳細な機能分析を行うことを目的とするものである。研究期間中、命令・依頼のモダリティと意志のモダリティについての分析を行い、後者は論文として公刊した。意志のモダリティの主要な形式はシヨウ(動詞の意志形)とスル(動詞の基本形)である。シヨウは基本的には聞き手への伝達を意図しない典型的な意志を表し、独話で発話される。一方、スルはその行為の実行を聞き手に表明することを意図する点で典型的な意志ではない。シヨウは聞き手とのさまざまな関係(恩恵の直接的、間接的な付与)によって対話においても使われるように機能の拡張が起こる。特に、ケンカをしている二人にむけて発話される「ケンカもうやめようよ」のような行為の提案の機能を持つ文は興味深い。通常の意志の文では終助詞ヨを文末に付加することはできない。(「明日は早いから、寝ようよ」は意志の文とは解釈できない)が、このタイプでは可能になる。音調的にもこの行為の提案のシヨウは急激な上昇が起きてから下降する点で、勧誘の文に近い。これらから、純粋な意志の表出の形式であるシヨウが、話し手の行為に聞き手の参加を求める勧誘の文に連続していく様相を把握することができた。なお、この研究よって構築されたデータベースを用いて、疑問文の反語解釈、感嘆文などの行為要求以外のモダリティ表現の分析にも着手しており、成果の一部は拙著『日本語疑問文における判断の諸相』(くろしお出版)にも含まれている。
