平成11年度に引き続き、古代マヤ社会における職業の専門化に関する研究を進めるために、中米グアテマラのアグアテカ遺跡から出土した古典期後期末(西暦800年頃)の約4000点の石器の製作技術に関する基礎データを現地で抽出した。さらに、グアテマラ国立人類学歴史学研究所から720点の石器を借り受け、高倍率の金属顕微鏡を用いて石器の使用痕を分析することによって石器の機能を同定した。現地で行った黒曜石とチャート製の計267点の複製石器による体系的な実験使用痕研究の方法論的枠組みに基づいて、各石器の使用部位、操作法、被加工物といった基礎データを抽出した。また、石器の使用痕を客観的に提示するために各石器の使用部位を中心に、カラースライドおよび白黒写真を撮影した。上記の石器の基礎データをコンピューターに入力してデータベース化した。共伴遺物の空間分布、土壌の化学分析、およびマヤ文字の解読の成果と照らし合わせて、貝・骨・木・皮製の工芸品やその他の石器の製作、石彫の彫刻、調理をはじめとする住居の内外で古代マヤ人が石器で行った諸活動の共時的な空間分布を総合的に解釈した。
