本研究の目的は、マヤ文明黎明期に建造されたアグアダ フェニックス遺跡の神殿ピラミッド跡、支配層住居跡、農民住居跡や各建造物跡の周囲を対象に広範な発掘区を設定して層位的に全面発掘調査を行い、石器、土器、その他の全出土遺物及び神殿ピラミッドのようなモニュメント建築の出現と変容の詳細な分析を通して、まだ十分に解明されていないマヤ文明の起源と黎明期の政治経済組織の詳細を実証的に明らかにすることである。新型コロナウイルス感染症の蔓延によって、2020年度と2021年度は現地調査を実施できなかったが、2022年度は2022年6月にメキシコのアグアダ・フェニックス遺跡の発掘調査を再開し、2023年2～3月にも発掘調査と遺物分析を実施できた。青山が担当する石器分析では、これまでに22,832点の石器を分析した。その内訳は、22,645点の打製石器（黒曜石製391点とチャート製22,254点）と187点の磨製石器他である。アグアダ・フェニックス遺跡の手工業生産を復元するために、メキシコ国立人類学歴史学研究所の許可のもと石器を日本に借りだして先古典期前期（前1200～前1000年）と先古典期中期（前1000～前700年）の一次堆積ゴミ捨て場から出土した石器の使用痕分析を高倍率の金属顕微鏡を用いて実施した。メキシコ高地・グアテマラ高地産黒曜石の遠距離交換の通時的な変化を検証するために、ハンドヘルド蛍光Ｘ線分析計による黒曜石製石器の産地同定を行った。青山和夫『マヤ文明の戦争：神聖な争いから大虐殺へ』を京都大学学術出版会から出版した。世界で初めてマヤ文明の戦争を通時的に論じる単著書であり、考古学、碑文、図像や関連研究分野を組み合わせて、マヤ文明の戦争の具体的な痕跡、代表的な事例及び戦争の痕跡が認められる遺跡の特徴を提示する。青山は、共編著『Mesoamerica』をメキシコ国立自治大学から出版した。
