本研究の学術的「問い」は、先土器時代からどのようにマヤ文明が発展したのか、その起源・形成プロセスを明らかにすることである。新型コロナウイルス感染症の蔓延のために、2020年度と2021年度は現地調査に行けなかった。グアテマラのセイバル遺跡周辺の治安悪化のために、2022年度はマヤ文明最古・最大の公共祭祀建築を擁するメキシコのアグアダ・フェニックス遺跡の発掘調査と遺物調査を実施した。青山が担当する石器分析では、これまでに22,832点の石器を分析した。その内訳は、22,645点の打製石器（黒曜石製391点とチャート製22,254点）と187点の磨製石器他である。アグアダ・フェニックス遺跡の手工業生産を復元するために、メキシコ国立人類学歴史学研究所の許可のもと石器を日本に借りだして先古典期前期（前1200～前1000年）と先古典期中期（前1000～前700年）の一次堆積ゴミ捨て場から出土した石器の使用痕分析を高倍率の金属顕微鏡を用いて実施した。メキシコ高地・グアテマラ高地産黒曜石の遠距離交換の通時的な変化を検証するために、ハンドヘルド蛍光Ｘ線分析計による黒曜石製石器の産地同定を行った。この2つの分析法はマヤ文明黎明期の研究において国内外で未開発な分野であり、その進展はマヤ文明研究に新たな地平線を切り開く。青山和夫(2022)『マヤ文明の戦争：神聖な争いから大虐殺へ』を京都大学学術出版会から出版した。本書は、世界で初めてマヤ文明の戦争を通時的に論じる単著書である。青山とRodrigo Liendo Stuardo共編著 (2022) 『Mesoamerica: el Estudio de Sus Procesos de Transformacion Social desde una Perspectiva de Larga Duracion』をメキシコ国立自治大学から出版した。
