室町時代後期、東福寺の搭頭、善慧院を拠点に活躍した彭叔守仙の生涯を辿るべく、彼の残した筆跡や手択本を調査することが最大の課題であった。調査内容のデータベース化の試みや、研究者へ提供するためのネットワーク環境作りなど残された課題は多くあるものの、以下に述べるように、一定の成果を挙げ得たものと考えている。第一に、彭叔と関東文壇・画壇との密接な関係を追跡し得たことである。室町後期、「坂東の大学」として隆盛を誇った足利学校の歴代の庠主が彭叔に参禅しているという事実を端緒に、関東北条氏と彭叔、ひいては東福寺との関係について精査できたのは有益であった(成果公開は未定)。足利学校と禅林の関係は、一方で茨城正宗寺に住した画僧、雪村友継との交流を考える上でも重要な視座となり得るのである。本研究では歴史史料からだけでは見えてこない交流の濃密さを検証すべく、彭叔の別集『猶如昨夢』に注目し、所収の題材や措辞を検討することも重要な課題であった。第二に、往時の画壇を中心とする文化圏に果たした五山僧の役割の称揚である。現在の学術領域分化の中で見過ごされてきた画壇・文壇の相互交流の核として、禅僧の存在意義を解明することも重要な目的であった。具体的には前述の彭叔の家集や彼の参加した聯句作品の分析を端緒に、狩野派や前述の雪村によって室町後期に確定していく漢画系画題の受容と定着の具体的なあり方を考究し、室町期の文化人が漢故事をどのように捉えていたかを解明することにより、当時の価値観を探るこひとにもつながっていくと考えたのである。近世初期に成立した画題集成『後素説』の検討として研究成果を公表している。ただ、このテーマは重要かつ困難な作業であり、今後の課題のひとつともなっている。基本的な史資料調査やデータベース化等、時間の関係で消化できていない課題は数多い。これらは今後、更に踏査を続ける所存である。
