徳田進氏の著作『孝子説話集の研究 中世編』(昭和38年)で指摘された、伝狩野元信筆、当時すでに所在不明であった「二十四孝図屏風」。『宕陰存稿』によると「四方学儒」が製作に関与したというこの屏風の存在が、本研究の端緒であった。その後、武田恒夫氏により、狩野永徳周辺での製作とされる「二十四孝図」屏風六曲一双が紹介された。そこには、本邦室町時代末期の五山を代表する四学僧の賛がそれぞれ貼付されていたのであった。また、そののち金沢市立中村記念美術館所蔵「古筆手鑑」には、元来屏風に貼付されるべきであった賛色紙が三点押されていることが判明した。こうした新たな展開をふまえ、今年度の研究では、この屏風が聖護院新門主で、関白近衛植家の息、道澄がその亡母の七回忌を期して狩野派(おそらく永徳)に依頼したものであること、その製作には、道澄と親交があり、かつ屏風の賛の作者でもある仁如集堯及び策彦周良が大きく関与をしていたであろうことを、主に五山学僧の側の資史料によって調査・論証した。この調査の過程で、もっとも痛感したのは、国文学研究はもちろん、美術史研究においても政治・思想史研究においても、第一等史料になり得る、如上の室町時代末期の学僧の作品集が一切、集成・利用されていないことであった。したがって、本研究では、基本的諸史料の整備に重点を置いた。即ち、仁如の別集『鏤氷集』の検討、策彦の別集の集成等が主要な作業であった。また、五山学僧が製作に関与したと考えられる多くの「二十四孝図」及び「二十四孝賛」の検討も併せて行った。その過程で、堂上や地下の連歌師や絵師と五山学僧の関係の一端にも研究を進めた。
