昨年度の研究では、12世紀以降、古典古代の英雄の物語やアーサー王伝説が騎士制度を正当化し理想化するうえで重要な役割を演じたことを明らかにした。本年度はまず、そうした歴史主義的神話イデオロギーの形成とほぼ時を同じくして、名誉欲や色欲に溺れる騎士のステレオタイプがラテン語の諷刺文学の中で確立していった経緯を考察した。時代が下って1360年代以降になると、対仏戦争の長期化およびイングランド側の戦況の悪化を背景に、戦争を遂行する諸侯や騎士身分への批判がより具体的な形をとって現れ始める。例えば説教文学では、公教会の保護や民衆の庇護よりも己の利害を優先する騎士身分への非難が語られるようになり、また、戦費調達のために課された重税への不満や、家臣団を率いて領民を抑圧し搾取する貴族への抗議が、作者不詳の政治・社会詩の中に頻繁に表明されるようになる。さらに14世紀末から15世紀にかけて書かれたチョーサーのCanterbury Tales,トマス・マロリーのMorte Darthur,Auiterative Morte Arthureなどの詩作品においては、騎士制度を正当化するための手段として用いられた英雄神話を脱構築する形で、騎士道の矛盾や戦争の生み出す社会悪についての批判的な洞察が示されるようになる。特にチョーサーのThe Monk's Taleの中には、騎士の模範とされた古代の勇士、アレクサンダー大王とジュリアス・シーザーが領土拡張を目的とした対外遠征の果てに悲劇的な死を迎える話が含まれており、領民を統治する君主としての美徳よりも戦場でのヒロイズムを重視する騎士身分イデオロギーへの批判が暗に表明されているものと解釈できる。この点に関しては11月19日に慶応大学で開催された"Chaucer 2000 Symposium in Tokyo"において口頭発表を行なった(発表題目:"Chivalry and History in the Monk's Tale")。また、この発表原稿に加筆修正を加えたものがPOETICA55(2001)に掲載される予定である。
