本年度は、主に15世紀前半のイングランドで詩作を行ったジョン・ガウアー、トマス・ホックリーヴ、ジョン・リドゲイトの詩作品(Vox Clamantis, Cronica Tripertita, In Praise of Peaxe, Regiment of Princes, Fall of Princes, Troy Book)に焦点を絞り、1)各々のテクストが王権と正義の問題をどのような角度から論じているか、2)そうした見解が政治哲学に関する過去の文献や「君主の鑑」の伝統にどの程度依拠しているか、3)リチャード二世の在位中に書かれた同種の英詩との間にいかなる類似性や相違点が存在するのか、4)同時代の年代記や政治的著作(ジョン・フォーテスキューの著作であるOn the Laws and Governance of England等)との間にどのような共通点が見られるのかについて考察した。15世紀前半は、ヘンリー四世による王位簒奪に始まり、ヘンリー四世治下にイングランド各地で多発した一揆や反乱、ヘンリー四世と皇太子との間の政治的対立、ヘンリー五世率いる英軍の対仏戦争における劇的な勝利、ヘンリー五世の急逝、幼年であったヘンリー六世即位後の内政の混乱、バラ戦争の勃発と、イングランドにとってはまさに激動の時代であり、国王の権威の源泉は何か、王権を支え、維持するものは何か、国王権力はいかに行使されるべきかについて種々の見解が表明された時代である。本研究では、上記の三詩人が各々の社会的立場を投影するような形で詩作を行い(ガウアーは中小地主層に属する法律家、ホックリーヴは王宮に仕える下級役人、リドゲイトは王家と関わりの深い修道士)、時にはランカスター家の王たちに直接語りかけ助言を与えるような形式で自論を展開し、また時には不穏な政情を内面化するかのように自らを病人や亡命者に譬えながら己の複雑な心情を吐露し、当時の社会的・政治的状況に敏感に反応しつつ王権の意義に対する深い洞察を個々のテクストにおいて表明していることを明らかにした。本年度までの研究の成果の一部は"Principis Umbra : Kingship, Justice, and Pity in John Gower's Poetry,""The Voice of an Exile : From Ovidian Lament to Prophecy in Book 1 of John Gower's Vox Clamantis"と題する論文として、平成18年中に米国の出版社から発表される予定である。

This year's poetry is mainly from the first half of the 15th century.(Vox Clamantis, Cronica Tripertita, In Praise of Peaxe, Regiment of Princes, Fall of Princes, Troy Book) 2) The opinions of the two sides are related to political philosophy, and the past documents and the "monarch's judgment" are related to the degree of the system. 3) The two sides are related to the same kind of English poetry, and the similarities and contradictions exist. 4) Contemporary chronology and political works (on the Laws and Governance of England, etc.) In the first half of the 15th century, when the throne was seized, there were many conflicts in various places under the rule of the fourth century, and political conflicts between the fourth and the crown prince. In the fifth century, the British army fought against the great victory, the death of the fifth century, and the chaos of internal affairs after the sixth century. The era of excitement, the source of the king's power, the support of the king, the maintenance of the king's power, the exercise of the king's power, and the opinions of the king indicate the era. This study describes the three poets in the book and their respective social positions.(The social and political situation at that time was sensitive to the meaning of the king's words. One of the research results of this year is entitled "Principis Umbra : Kingship, Justice, and Pity in John Gower's Poetry,""The Voice of an Exile : From Ovidian Lament to Prophecy in Book 1 of John Gower's Vox Clamantis".
