本研究は、中級移行段階の読解において、読解に使用される文章の性質、学習者の知識、その知識の処理における自動化との関連で、効果的な指導法を明らかにすることを目的とし、教材作成及び実験、アイカメラでの調査を行ったものである。教材として、文章中の語彙の処理の自動化を促すための、単語フラッシュ認識練習教材を作成した。これは、単語の瞬間的な認知、認識を促す練習をすることにより、文章理解の際の単語の意味処理を自動化させるための教材である。コンピュータ画面に、ある単語をごく短時間(1/4〜3秒)提示し、画面上からその情報が消えた後で、学習者が提示されていた単語の再認、あるいは意味認識ができるかを選択式の問題に答える練習教材である。本研究においては、単語提示を、単語の品詞別、表記別(漢字、カタカナ、ひらがな)、初級教科書における提出課別、読解文章別に行えるように、教材を整備した。本研究において、単語フラッシュ認識練習教材を処遇として用い、読解の実験を行った。実験においては、被験者を2グループに分け、処遇を与えた場合と処遇を与えない場合とで、内容理解テストにおいて差が見られるかを、標準化した得点(Z値)により比較した。その結果、処遇を与えた場合の方が与えない場合より、標準化得点が2.3〜2.6点上がったことがわかった。被験者を読解力の高い学習者と低い学習者と2群に分け、標準化得点の変化を調べたところ、読解力の高い学習者より、低い学習者の方が処遇後の得点の伸びが著しく、3.2〜3.7点上がった。また、被験者に対するアンケートでは、単語フラッシュ認識練習教材に対し、全体の79.2%の者が役に立つと考えていることがわかった。アイカメラでの読解中の学習者の目の動きの記録から、中級移行段階においては、注視が非常に多く、処理容量が主に文字及び単語認識のために割かれていること、読解力の高い学習者の方が低い学習者より逆行を多く行っているが、全体の注視数は読解力の高低で有意な差はないこと、中級移行段階より中級半ばの学習者の方が注視数が減っていることが認められ、まとまった意味処理に比重が移ることがわかった。
