「橋浦泰雄関係文書」(以下、「文書」と略す)を周到に分類、調査した上で、それ以外の同時代資料と照合させることで、戦時下日本社会の民俗学組織化の概要を再構成した。特に、「文書」を旧蔵していた橋浦が柳田国男の高弟として特に地方する民俗学の組織化に腐心したことから、その形成過程を跡づけることを中心にした。その結果、(1)昭和初年、画家としてプロレタリア芸術運動の指導者だった橋浦が弾圧によって次第に民俗学へ傾斜していく中で、彼の生活を援助する目的で有志が行った頻繁に行われた絵画頒布会が成功をおさめ、次第に地方でも彼の民俗・郷土をテーマとする画会が開催されるようになり、在地の郷土史家が挙ってその運営に参加することが、戦時下における柳田民俗学の組織化の重要な一端を担っていたことが判った(拙稿「柳田民俗学の組織化-橋浦泰雄の絵画頒布会に見る-」『人間学研究』第二号2000年)。(2)前項から見て、戦時下に整えられた柳田民俗学の体制とは、在地の民俗学者の積極的な支持が一部にあったことが判る。戦後、柳田民俗学は地方研究者から資料を吸収して、成果を独占したという批判がなされるが、本研究は、その嚆矢となった岡正雄による柳田批判の成立背景が昭和10年『民間伝承』編集方針への不満にあったことを「文書」から割り出し、その意味で体制としての柳田批判が、特定の時代条件に拘束されたものであることを示した(拙稿「柳田国男と『民間伝承の会』」『東北学』第二号2000年)。(3)以上の項目とは別個に、「文書」に収録されていた橋浦の日記、肉筆原稿、書簡類など、多くの未公刊資料をもとに、彼の評伝をまとめた(拙著『橋浦泰雄伝-柳田学の大いなる伴走者-』晶文社2000年)。執筆にあたっては地方研究者と橋浦の交流を重視し、組織家としての橋浦の力量を高く評価する方針をとった。
