古墳時代の製塩に関する過去の研究は、製塩土器あるいは製塩遺跡の分布を対象としたものが中心であった。これに対し、本研究では当時の製塩が藻塩焼き法によって行われたことを前提とし、周知の製塩遺跡とその遺跡の周辺における藻場と沿岸地形との関係を構造的に把握することを目指した。対象は瀬戸内海域における島嶼部を主たる対象とした。これによって数ある瀬戸内の島嶼において製塩を可能とする条件を備える島はかなり限定されることが判明した。これは(1)藻塩焼き法の原料となる海藻(アマモ・ホンダワラ等)が生息する海岸地形の有無、(2)作業場となる砂浜の有無、などが大きな要因であり、製塩遺跡の規模や継続時期に関しては(3)砂浜の規模が直接影響を与えていることがわかった。また製塩遺跡の規模・継続時期に関する(3)の要因は(4)集落遺跡の経営が可能な平地の存在とその規模に関することがわかった。なお、製塩土器を副葬する古墳の分布する島嶼はかならずしも上述の要件を満たしていない場合もあり、この点に関しては製塩作業に関する分業を視点に入れることによって解釈が可能であると考えた。瀬戸内島嶼部の製塩遺跡はその密度が時期によって移り変わることが判明しているが、この点も上述の諸要因と密接に関連していることを推測する。さらに比較対照のために九州、山陰、丹後地域の沿岸部遺跡に関してもサーベイを実施した。しかし、瀬戸内島嶼部のような製塩遺跡の複雑な動向は看取されなかった。ジェネラル・サーベイが天候によって十分に実施できない島嶼部もあったが、概ね上述のような結論を得た。
