昨年度末に着手した、ジョージ・フィリップス商会の合併相手、ボディントン商会の西インド貿易活動の調査を継続した。この調査のため、昨年2月に現地に赴いて内容を確認したブリストル大学所有のブリストル商人兼西インド・プランター、ピニー商会の営業史料の一部を、マイクロフイルムとして入手し、この読み込みを行った。また、京都大学所蔵のイギリス議会文書・特別委員会報告と証言集のうち、18世紀後半から19世紀前半の西インド関連のものについて、調査を行った。その他、当該時期の西インド、砂糖・奴隷・たばこ貿易に関連する文献を、収集し、調査した。これらから、ボディントン商会は、18世紀後半すでに、1800年代のフィリップス商会とほぼ同型の砂糖委託販売業を行っていたことが、確認された。さらに、それだけでなく海上保険仲介・手形引受・証券取引業務もすでに開始されていたことも、十分に確認された。ただし、ボディントン商会は、後のフィリップス商会のような総合的性格は持たず、あくまで西インド地域と砂糖を専門としていた。従って、ボディントン商会からボディントン・フィリップス商会への展開は、西インド産砂糖取引において発達した委託販売システムが、他地域・他品目の取引に拡大していく過程と、理解することができる。また、ボディントン商会が、1837年奴隷制廃止にともなう政府による損失賠償で巨額の保証金を得ていることを発見したため、同社が当時最大手の代表的西インド商会のひとつであったことが確認できた。本年度の研究成果は、直接的には、本年5月18日(土)の社会経済史学会第71回全国大会(於:和歌山大学)で、「イギリス西インド貿易におけるコミッション・システムの発達とロンドン商人」の論題で、発表される。
