项目摘要

平成13年度は、国内(主に国立国会図書館)と米国(詳細は後述するが、主にマッカーサー記念館とフーヴァー研究所資料室)で本テーマに関する1次資料と2次資料の調査・収集のほか、ハーバート・C・フーヴァーを中心とする親日派、知日派の対日観を、1930年代から冷戦初期の日米関係と米国の対外政策における思想的位置付けの観点から検証を行った。このテーマに関する中間報告は、平成13年7月20日第26回アメリカ史研究者夏期セミナー(同志社大学で開催され、司会は柏倉康夫京都大学文学研究科教授)で「ボナー・フェラーズ准将と日米関係-1930年代から1950年代の米国内外交論争におけるハーバート・C・フーヴァ系知日派の位置付け」として発表した。この報告を行うにあたり、フーヴァー文書(アイオワ州フーヴァー大統領図書館所蔵)とファラーズ文書(バージニア州のダグラス・マッカーサー記念館所蔵)が大変役に立った。平成13年12月と平成14年3月は、スタンフォード大学のフーヴァー研究所資料室のボナー・フェラーズ文書などを閲覧・収集し、また、平成14年1月は前述のマッカーサー記念館でフェラーズ文書などを閲覧、収集し、現在は、前述の中間報告テーマをもとにした草稿の修正・加筆を行っている。本テーマに関する本の執筆は、ボナー・フェラーズの日米関係における影響と位置付け(草稿は現在執筆中)を検証しながら、今後積極的に進めていく。
