本研究では、日本の伝統的住居を調査し、以下のような空間構造を明らかにした。アイヌの住居(チセ)の空間構造の特徴として、いろりを囲んで3つの座として、空間が分節されている。着座には神を基準とした、上位・下位があり、この神の出入り口をカミテ、入口側をシモテとするカミ-シモの空間軸、シソ、ハリキソの着座の上/下を爪すヒダリ-ミギの空間軸が存在する。住居はこれらの空間軸に基づき、構成されており、空間序列が生活を規定している。沖縄の伝統的住居は、東西方向に並ぶ-列型であるが、前列は東側からカミ・ジャー(上座/一番座とも呼ばれる)、シム・ジャー(下座/一番座とも呼ばれる、先祖がまつられる)、トゥン・グワ(飛び出した小室の意/台所である、最近まで土間であった)の順に並ぶ。後列はウチ・バラ(下の庫の意)と呼ばれる狭い室である。この住居にはカミ・ジャー-トゥン・グワ方向にカミ-シモの空間軸が存在し、後列-前列方向にオク-マエの空間軸が存在する。これらの空間軸に従い、各室での生活行為、着座位置などが決定される。四間取住居・妻入住居では、続き間の連続する室と非連続な室を明らかにすることで、同じ間仕切り(襖や板戸)でも、その空間分割の強度がかわることを明らかにした。その背景には、カミ-シモの空間序列、オク-マエの空間序列が強く作用し、それらの空間序列と神・仏といった宗教観、世界観が大きく作用していることを明らかにした。このように、日本の伝統的住居は、神・仏などの宗教観、世界観に基づいた住居空間各部の序列が存在し、それらの序列に基づいた空間軸に従い、各室での生活行為、着座位置などが決定される、ことが明らかとなった。
