本研究では、高高度に順化したヒトの体力および発汗能についてどのような特徴が見られるかを追究すると同時に、ネパールと日本で、地理的条件が類似した地域に定住しているヒトたちの生活習慣が、体力や発汗能にどのような影響を及ぼしているかを調査・比較検討することを目的としてきた。しかしながら、平成12年度の報告書にも記したよう、ここ1〜2年ネパールは国情が非常に不安定で、予定していた調査地を変更せざるを得なくなり、カトマンドゥーおよびポカラとした。また、対する日本の方は、長崎とした。それに伴い、調査内容にも若干の変更を余儀なくされたが、そのような経緯を加味して、この2年間の研究を整理すると、以下のとおりである。まず、紫外線(UV-B)の照射量は、ネパール(カトマンドゥーおよびポカラ、以下ネパールとする。)と日本(長崎、以下日本とする。)との間に、今回の調査では有意差は見られなかった。これは測定器具や環境条件にも左右されたと考えられる。しかしながら、手掌部の皮膚接写撮影では、明らかな視覚的違いが認められ、同じ年齢であっても、ネパール人女性のほうが、シワやシミが多く見られた。これは長期にわたり紫外線に暴露されている影響と考えられる。これらが、直接的に発汗能にどのような影響を及ぼすのかについては、より高高度での被検者を対象として、今後の課題としていきたい。次ぎに、生活習慣に関する調査結果であるが、1日の消費エネルギー量は、ネパール人女性と日本人女性との間に有意差は見られなかった。しかし、24時間生活時間調査では、ネパール人女性の方が、日常的な行動(水汲み、炊事、掃除など)にかける時間が多く、生活パターンそのものに大きな違いがあることが認められた。すなわち、単にエネルギー消費量の測定のみならず、文化的背景をも考慮した生活行動の記述が重要であり(「研究発表」参照)、その上で体力に及ぼす影響を検討する必要のあることが示唆された。
