本研究では、1.学校教育の非貨幣的効果、2.学校教育の間接効果と直接効果、3.学校教育と卒業後教育(生涯学習)、という3つの観点から、時間使用に与える教育の効果に関する分析を行った。主たる研究成果は次の3点にまとめられる。第1点は、高学歴であるほど忙しいにもかかわらず積極的に多様な自由時間を楽しんでいることである。高学歴者は、生理的必要時間やテレビ、休息などの時間を削ることで自由時間をつくりだし、忙しく自由時間を楽しんでいるのである。これを20年前のデ-タと比較すると、性格により変化の方向は異なっている。男性では学歴間格差が縮小したのに対し、女性では格差は拡大したのである。この他に、年間を通じて学歴が高いものほど多様な学習活動に参加していることなども明らかになった。第2の点は、学校教育は時間選好という価値観の内面化を通じて直接的に時間使用に影響を及ぼしていることである。学校教育は、職業などを通じて間接的に時間配分に大きな影響を及ぼしている。しかしながら、時間配分には間接効果だけでは説明できない大きな学歴間格差が存在しているのである。全体平均では学歴間格差の小さい男子でも、「職種」という教育の間接効果を通じて学歴間格差の拡大がみられた。さらに、教育の直接効果をもたらす要因について検討したところ、未来志向や余暇志向といった価値観が教育期間の延長に伴って強く内面化され、時間配分上の格差を生み出している、という知見を得た。第3番目に、卒業後教育(生涯学習)も時間配分に影響を及ぼしていることが明らかになった。学習活動を行っているものは、生理的必要時間やテレビ時間を減らすことで、多様な余暇活動を行っているのである。特に男性では、生涯学習の影響は学校教育の影響よりも強くなっている。
