無文字社会であるアンデスに生まれた先住民グァマン・ポマ(1535?-1615)は独学で習得したスペイン語を駆使して浩瀚な記録文書〔クロニカ〕を認めた。文書を認めるという行為は、文字の欠如を理由にアンデス住民の文化的能力を否定したスペイン人(とくに16世紀後半にインカ帝国関係のクロニカを記したトレド派のクロニスタ)に対して先住民が企てた「抵抗」の一形態であった。今回の研究では、"インカ暴君論"、"インディオ=偶像崇拝者"、布教権などを理由にインカ帝国の征服とアンデス支配を正当化するスペイン人の「文字の暴力」に対して、グァマン・ポマがアンデス文化の存続を訴えるために編み出した戦術を明らかにするために、作品の第一部の最終章にあたる「征服の章」の分析を試みた。具体的には、「アンデス住民はスペイン人が来るはるか以前からキリスト教徒であった」と主張し、スペイン人によるアンデス征服の正当性を否定するグァマン・ポマが「征服の章」で,1530年代後半にクスコで勃発し1572年までつづく「インカの反乱」を率いた重要な人物ティトゥ・クシ・ユパンキや土着主義的運動として知られる「タキオンコイ」(1560年代)について一切黙して語っていないことに注目し、同時代のスペイン人側の史料と照合して、「沈黙」がグァマン・ポマの編み出した巧妙な戦術の一つであることを明らかにし、その歴史的意味を考察した。その成果は2004年6月にセビーリャ大学(スペイン)で開催された第2回国際ペルー研究者会議において「グァマン・ポマがトレド派のクロニカに見られる文字の暴力に対抗して編み出した戦術の特徴」Las caracteristicas de la estrategia de Guaman Poma para refutar la violencia de letras en las cronicas toledanasとして発表した。
