宮城県北西部旧花山村(現栗原市)の丘陵地において、以下の項目に関する調査を行った。1.湿原堆積物による過去1500年間の植生変遷の復元丘陵地内に位置する大沼湿原の堆積物に関する分析から、過去1500年間の植生変遷を明らかにした(吉田・西城,2005)。その結果は、この地域の森林植生が約360年前にブナ-イヌブナを主とする落葉広葉樹林からコナラ-ミズナラの二次林へと変化したことを示している。以上のことから、この地域では、約360年前以降、森林植生に対する人為の影響が強まったことが明らかとなった。2.丘陵地内にみられる炭焼き窯跡の分布および使用年代に関する調査過去の薪炭林利用の痕跡である炭焼き窯跡の分布を大沼湿原周辺において調査し、窯底を埋める堆積物中の炭化木片の年代測定を行った。その結果、炭焼き窯が使用されていたのは約280年前以降であることが判明した。この事実と上記花粉分析の結果から、約360年前に起った森林植生の二次林化は、藩政期における木炭生産を要因とするものであったことが推定された。この内容は、2005年度東北地理学会秋季大会にて発表した。3.森林植生の現況とその成立過程に関する調査森林植生の現況とその成立過程について、景観生態学的観点からの解析を試みた。その結果、植物社会学的手法によって8タイプの森林群落が抽出され、個々の種組成や構造は微地形、および当該地域の農林鉱業や生活様式の歴史的変遷と密接に関わっていることが把握できた。その成果は、次頁に示す論文(平吹・中條,2006)にまとめたほか、第53回日本生態学会において発表した。
