Research results of recent years have demonstrated that post-transcriptional processes contribute significantly to the expression of the genetic information. During their lifetime, mRNAs interact with a large number of different trans-acting factors. Because each mRNA is the blueprint for a particular protein and can be bound by a different set of the many mRNA-interacting proteins the resulting ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP) is believed to be unique in its composition. This implies that the specific set of proteins, non-coding RNAs and other molecules bound to a specific mRNA control its fate and function ("mRNP Code" concept). The composition of mRNPs as a whole and the properties of some RNA-binding proteins have been intensively investigated in recent years. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how the mRNP code manifests itself on individual transcripts and how it is read by the cell. The SPP aims to bring together scientists from different disciplines such as systems biology, biochemistry, structural biology and bioinformatics to decipher the mRNP code. In the coordination project we apply for funds to carry out important central activities of the priority programme, such as workshops and meetings, promotion of national and international visibility, training and support for junior researchers as well as the creation of equal opportunities for female researchers.
