平成19年度は本研究の最終年度であることから、これまで二年間の研究成果を踏まえながら、「二人称の科学」の方法論として「科学のナラトロジー」の構想をまとめ上げるとともに、その仕上げとして「ホモ・ナランス(物語るヒト)」という新たな人間像を提起することを試みた。考察の中心に置いたのは、「因果性」概念の再検討である。因果関係の解明は現在では自然科学の専有物となった観があるが、もともと因果概念は語源的にも人間の行為と責任に密接な関わりをもつ。マッハやラッセルがつとに指摘しているように、自然科学において中核的役割を果たしているのは、「因果概念」であるよりは「関数概念」である。物理量間の相互作用を関数関係によって記述するとき、「原因-結果」の概念はリダンダントなものとなる。科学において因果関係が説明されるとき、そこでは連続的な自然現象に人間的関心に即した特定の観点から切れ目が入れられているのであり、連続的現象が離散的現象として捉え直されているのである。その人間的関心を支えているのが生活世界の原範疇である「物語り的因果性」にほかならない。その意味で、科学的説明に現われる因果関係は、この「物語り的因果性」における原因と結果の時間間隔をゼロにまで近づけた、いわば極限形態なのである。このことは、「物語り的因果性」のカテゴリーが有効に機能するのが、人間的関心が集約された医療、看護、法廷などの場面であることからも明らかであり、そこにこそ「二人称の科学」が成立する余地が存する。人間は自己の経験を「物語り」として時間的に組織化することによって行為と責任を引き受ける動物なのであり、それゆえ「ホモ・ナランス」にほかならないのである。
