本研究の目的は、特に熱帯雨林において、斬新なデータ収集法を開発する足がかりをつかむことである。今年度は、これまでに実施した文献調査、データ収集法のレビュー、国際林業研究センター(CIFOR)主催の貧困環境ネットワーク(PEN)での議論をもとに、次の2つのプロジェクトにおいて新手法のフィールド実験を行った。(1)ナイジェリア調査〜外国人特別研究員Bongo Adiと共同で実施した「社会資本、コミュニティー開発、貧困:アフリカにおける文化的規範の影響に関する研究」(特別研究員奨励費)における、貧困、共同体、社会資本、文化規範に関する家計調査ならびに実験。(2)カンボディア調査〜「紛争後の貧困と障害者の実態調査」(基盤研究B)における、生業、所得、社会資本、主観的厚生に関する家計調査とNGOの社会プログラム評価。各プロジェクトにおいて、データ収集法(標本抽出法を含む)の試行錯誤を重ね、収集が非常に困難なデータに関する新しい知見を得た。データ収集法の開発から派生する形で、斬新な分析手法、アプローチを模索する作業を併せて進め、GISデータを使った空間分析と社会ネットワークデータを使ったネットワーク分析を熱帯伝統農業に応用する初めての試みの準備段階として、既存のペルー・アマゾン調査データを基に、森林伐採(土地特性、労働投人、および血縁関係・労働交換に基づく社会ネットワーク)、土地利用(焼畑・氾濫原農業における土地利用形態・作物栽培)、景観(GIS)に関するデータベース作成を行った。また、関連する熱帯農業に関する理論研究の成果を、幾つかの論文にまとめ、内1本が国際雑誌に出版された。
