本研究の目的は、アフリカにおけるコミュニティー・ベースの貧困削減プログラムと、社会資本、特に、悪い文化規範としての呪術に代表される社会資本の劣化との関係を明らかにすることである。ナイジェリア現地調査において、社会実験ならびに調査票を用いた斬新なデータ収集を行う。本年度は、昨年度までの第1、2回現地予備調査に続いて、フィールド実験方法ならびに調査票の開発・試行に重点を置いた第3回現地予備調査を行った。外部から極めて観察しにくい呪術に関連する事象をいかに分析可能な形で測定するかが、昨年度から継続する最も大きな課題である。実験理論の精査、フィールドにおける深い理解、洞察、それらを統合する試行錯誤的作業を繰り返したが、Bongo Adi外国人研究員の就職に伴う研究員期間の短縮もあり、はっきりした答えは依然得られていない。一方で、地道な準備作業ならびに現地調査を経て、調査地にフィットしたフィールド実験のデザイン・応用に必要な知識・経験を蓄積することができた。特に、呪術の代理変数、信頼ゲームの拡張の可能性、関連する民俗学的要素に関して検討した。また、現地調査体制をさらに充実させることができた。それらを生かして、方法論をある程度確立した後に本調査・本実験を進めることが、来年度以降の課題である。実際、本研究は、来年度から同じくナイジェリアで実施する、本研究とは直接関連しない別の新しい研究プロジェクトへと発展した。
