本研究の目的は、地域レベルのソーシャル・キャピタル指標を精緻化し、それを測定するために、既存の個人データを地域レベルのデータに変換する手法を開発し、人口動態的票因を除いたうえで両者に関連が見られるか検討を行うことにある。具体的には、これまでの国内外における先行研究についてレビューを網羅的に行ない、ソーシャル・キャピタル指標のリストを作成し、それらを小規模な形で実際に検証するとともに、既存のデータを用いて日本におけるソーシャル・キャピタルと健康との関連についての検討を行うことを目的とした。その結果として、(1)調査データの二次利用に基づき用いられているソーシャル・キャピタル指標、(2)研究者が独自に調査を行ないその際に理論的検討に基づき開発されたソーシャル・キャピタル指標、(3)研究デザインや手法とシャーシャル・キャピタル指標との特徴が具体的に整理された。なお研究の成果は、米林他「ソーシャル・キャピタル研究における調査データの二次利用に関する検討」や、藤澤「ソーシャル・キャピタルと保健医療福祉」において報告した。また、エコロジカルレベルの分析において、ソーシャル.キャピタルと健康との間には、一定の関連性が示された。なお、本研究の成果は、藤澤他「地区単位のソーシャル・キャピタルが主観的健康感に及ぼす影響」として厚生の指標に報告した。こうした本研究成果は、わが国を母集団としたサンプルを用いた初めての定量的分析結果として報告された。
