项目摘要

バブル経済崩壊後,日本各地において計画的に設立された中華街あるいはチャイナタウンの名称を冠した「新中華街」がみられるようになった。本研究では,このような現象を捉え,「新中華街」の設立の背景,その意義について,経済地理学的および文化地理学的な側面から考察を行った。本研究に関連する先行研究はほとんど皆無であり,「新中華街」および現在計画中の「チャイナタウン」計画などに関する雑誌・新聞記事,開発計画書などの関係資料を収集・分析を行った。東京の台場小香港・立川中華街,名古屋の大津中華街,大阪の千里中華街(平成19年1月閉鎖)および上海新天地などの現地調査を行った。また,計画が途中で中止された仙台空中中華街構想についても調査した。同様な現象は海外でもみられ,韓国の仁川中華街,ソウル郊外高陽市の「一山中国城」計画地の調査も行った。また,近年,中国新移民が増加しているニュージーランドのオークランドの新しい華人商業地区の形成に関する調査も実施した。それらの結果,ほとんどの「新中華街」は,初期段階では多数の来訪者を獲得できたが,しだいに来訪者数は減少し,閉鎖に追い込まれたり,仙台空中中華街構想のように計画段階で中止に追い込まれる事例もあり,成立した新中華街も計画中の「新中華街」も,多くの課題を有していることが明らかになった。
