本研究は、18世紀後半から19世紀後半、大英帝国の様々な植民地活動が進みつつあった時、ヨーロッパの遥か彼方に位置し文明に汚されていない無垢の楽園として紹介された地域が、ヨーロッパ的メンタリティの中でどのように表象されていったかを検証することを目的に始められた。今年度は、イギリス・アメリカ、モラヴィア宗教団が複雑に絡んだ植民地建設の力学の焦点となったラブラドルとの対比も視野に入れ(8月にNorth American Society for the Study of Romanticismの国際学会で発表)、ニュージーランド、オーストラリアにイギリスが投影したユートピアについて考察をした。9月、12〜1月に、マッシイ大学をベースに、シドニー、ウェリントンの国立図書館、博物館などで資料を渉猟し、マッシイ大学では、ロマン主義の時代のイギリス研究とマオリ文化の接点を研究題材としているNikki Hessell, John Muirhead, Kim Worthington等と数度、非公式なセミナーで意見交換を行った。これによって、8月に行った口頭発表と南半球でのユートピア建設と植民地政策との関係をさらに繋げる視点が得られ、それは、南半球に直接言及はしていないが、5月に刊行予定のP.B.Shelleyに関する研究書の最終章に反映された。南半球における廃墟とユートピアについての研究の核となる部分は、日本英文学会関東支部の『関東英文学研究』第二号の〓〓論文として提出する予定である。萌芽研究なので、一次資料によって新たにイギリス研究と南半球の政治的・文化的関係を掘り起こす作業と、ニュージーランドの研究者たちとの交流を通じての今までイギリスなど北半球を中心としたイギリス研究では見えてこなかった視点をすくい上げる作業が中心となった。このような地域をまたがる研究の必要性を十分に実証できる論を構築するために、個々の小さい論文にまとめるのではなく、5章からなる原稿を本の原稿として纏め、公刊を目指している。
