健常者での実験では37名(43.6±2才)を被験者とし,各被験者につき馬脂油,オリーブ油,ワセリン,および無塗布での実験を行った。塗布前,塗布後120分,240分の経表皮水分喪失量と皮膚水分保有量を測定した。馬脂油,オリーブ油,ワセリンともに塗布後120分の経表皮水分喪失量は無塗布に比して有意に低下し,馬脂油では240分後でも低下が持続した。これは皮膚バリア機能の保全が,馬脂油でオリーブ油やワセリンよりも優れていることを示すものといえる。皮膚水分保有量は,いずれにおいても塗布120分後で有意に上昇し,240分後では120分後より減少した。塗布した後に油脂成分の皮膚表面残留(べたつき)が認められたが,馬脂油は皮膚吸収が速やかで,240分後にはワセリンにみられるような油脂残存感はなかった。入院患者での実験では整形外科病棟の7名を被験者とし,健常者と同様の実験を行った。この病棟の患者は高齢者や長期入院を余儀なくされる者が多く,皮膚障害を有するケースが多いことから選定した。健常者と類似の結果が得られたが,ここでは冬季は低温による末梢循環不全や空気乾燥によるドライスキンなど,皮膚トラブルが多発する季節であることを考慮し,季節による効果の違い(冬季(12月)と夏季(8月))も検討した。夏季では経表皮水分喪失量が高く,冬季では皮膚水分保有量が少なかったが,馬脂油はオリーブ油,ワセリンに比して,夏季には表皮水分喪失量を持続的に減少し,冬季には皮膚水分保有量を持続的に増大した。皮膚バリア機能の保全に優れ,かつ皮膚水分保有量を上昇させる馬脂油は,夏季は勿論のこと,保湿を目的としたスキンケアが重要となる冬季において皮膚機能の維持・増進に効果的であると結論される。
