本研究では、携帯メールやインターネットによる非対面型コミュニケーションへの意識や依存度が、他者への関心や他者に対する行動にどのように影響を与えるのかについて検討した。東海地方の大学生737名(男性334名、女性403名、平均年齢19.2±1.1歳)に、インターネット意識(以下ネット意識とする)12項目と、辻(1993)の他者意識尺度のうち13項目、および生活場面における行動様式を問う5項目を加えた30項目の質問紙による意識調査を行なった。1日あたりの携帯メール送信数について、性差はみられなかったのに対し、顕著な学部差がみられた。しかし、理系学部・文系学部で一貫性はみられず、学部のどのような特性が影響しているのかは不明であった。一方でパソコンのメールはほとんどが1通以下で、対象者に1年生が多かったことの影響と、大学生のケータイ依存傾向を反映した。ネット意識については、主因子法による因子分析(プロマックス回転)を行った結果、第1因子として「顔は知らないがインターネットや携帯メールで連絡する友人がいる」など、実面識がない人とのコミュニケーションを志向している「匿名性」因子、第2因子として「友人や家族と話すよりもインターネットを利用している方が楽しい」など、実生活でのコミュニケーションよりネットを好む「ネット逃避」因子、第3因子として「すぐ近くにいる友人ともメールでやり取りする」「メールの返事がすぐに来ないと不安になる」など、「メール依存」因子の3因子が抽出された。これらネット意識の下位尺度得点に性差や所属学部による差はみられなかった。「人の気持ちを理解するよう心がけている」など内的他者意識の高低、「階段で後ろから急いでいる人の気配を感じたら脇によける」など行動様式と、メール依存因子に関連があり、メール依存型は他者への関心が高く、社会的に容認されやすい行動様式を取る傾向がみられた。
