项目摘要

2007〜2009年の国際極年において,北極圏の地球環境科学を主題に,各国の大学院生を対象とする国際野外教育学校を企画・実施した.日本とノルウェーの永久凍土研究者で国際的な教授チームを組み,ノルウェー北部のスバルバール諸島を対象に,受講者に対し,(1)調査・観測法を取得させる,(2)2年間で得られた調査・観測データを解析させる,(3)国際学会や国際誌上で公表させる,という三段階の教育を行った.また,調査・観測法だけでなく,北極地域の調査活動に必要なサバイバル・危険回避の技術取得のための訓練も実施した.2年間で,日本,ヨーロッパ,アメリカの国々から,5名の教員,25名の大学院生が参加した.2年目となる2009年度は,8月中・下旬の2週間の期間に,スバルバールのロングイヤーベン地区(内陸)とカップリンネ地区(沿岸)において,セミナー,野外観測,試料採取,室内分析等を実施した.シロクマの出現により,野外活動の一部が制約されたが,充実した指導とデータ取得ができた.共同調査によって得られたデータに基づいて,学生各自がテーマを絞り,北極圏の陸域で起こる永久凍土環境変動の過去・現在・未来の諸側面について考察し,レポートを作成した.とくに,活動層厚の時空的変化,凍土の構成物質,凍土の化学的性質,多角形構造土の分布と内部構造,凍結割れ目の発達プロセスに関して,詳しい成果が得られた.最近の気候の年々変動と長期変動によって活動層厚の変化,永久凍土の部分融解,地形プロセスの年々変動が顕著に起こっており,今後も長期的なモニタリングの継続が必要なことが確認された.成果の一部は2008年7月の国際永久凍土学会で発表した.
