パ-ティの席などで,たまたま隣り合わせた未知の人と話をしているうちに,偶然共通の知人を発見して驚くことがある。こうしたとき,私たちは決まり文句のように「世間は狭いですねえ」というが,果して世間は本当に狭いか広いのか,これを実験によって測定しようというのが本研究の目的である。具体的には,日本社会の4つの地域から選ばれた未知の者同志が,間に何人の知人を介在させることによって連結させうるのか,言葉を換えると,日本の社会は何ステップのネットワ-ク構造を持っているのかを明らかにするのが目的である。まず全国4地区(札幌・東京・大阪・福岡)に目標となる人物を設定する。目標人物は各地区1名で,年令,職業上の地位,学歴などができるだけ類似しているものを選んだ。同時に4地区から,それぞれ60人の発信者を選定する。発信者に対して上記の目標人物を示し,自分の持っている知人の中から,目標人物に少しでも近づきそうな知人を各1名選ぶように依頼する。発信人により選定された仲介者に対してふたたび目標人物を示し,上と同様の手続を繰り返す。以下この手続きを,最終的に目標人物に到達するまで行う。かくして発信人に端を発した「友だちの輪」は,次々とつながって目標人物に至る連鎖を形成することになる。これはいわば「幸福の手紙」もどきの手法と言えよう。その結果,4つの地区に端を発した人間関係の連鎖は,すべて一つの大きな対人関係ネットワ-クの中に組み込まれてしまうことが明らかになった。文字通り「世界は一つ」なのである。ただしネットワ-ク構造はすべて等質ではなく,地域によって密度の違いがある。また地域間をつなぐ仲介者の数にも違いがある。詳細な構造解析は,現在なお進行中である。
